Firecrackers RM250, 000 seized

REGION LONG 9 January - 2nd Battalion Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD) foiled an attempt to smuggle various types of firecrackers worth about RM250, 000 in Canal illegal base here early yesterday morning.

Commander of 8th Brigade, Brigadier General Datuk Mohamad Zaki Hamzah said, during the operation at about 1.30 am, four members had been bumped by two men in their 20s who unloading boxes from a boat on the river bank.

"Once the members approached the area, the two suspects believed to be local and Thailand, fled to neighboring countries with a boat and left 36 large boxes.

"The inspection found a variety of fireworks smuggled from neighboring countries. We believe the fireworks for the Klang Valley market during this Chinese New Year celebration," he told reporters here today.

He added that the seized firecrackers priced between RM500 and RM2, 400 per box and the success was the seizure of fireworks this year.

In another development, Mohamad Zaki told, over the past year, the Eighth Infantry Brigade that served in Kelantan border contraband goods seized amounted to RM1.8 million, up 30 percent compared to 2010.

He said the biggest seizure involving 75.025 psychotropic drugs, estimated to cost RM1.3 million last November and the remaining rice, petrol and fireworks.

"In addition to confiscation of goods, we also arrested 73 illegal immigrants (PATI), respectively, 44 citizens of Myanmar, Bangladesh (12), Thailand (2), Cambodia (2) and other 13 people.
"The PATI submitted to the Immigration Department for further action," he said.

He said PATI entry into the country is active in a number of detected illegal base, such as Abraham Pensions, intersection, Canal, and the Serpent RAUT knife.
